I am not sure if that is possible to implement without writing the X-Plane engine from scratch. Only that way you can keep the performance cost at reasonable levels. Similar to how MSFS and modern engines handle. What will make a true difference is dynamically adjusted detail level and 3D selective rendering for shader maps. That can be done but with a hefty performance cost. Not without running the SS channels on double or quadruple the size of render resolution. Might look a bit better than Reshade, being natively implemented and optimised, but not by much. But reflections need much higher resolution to look crisp and good.Īny SSR shader that will be implemented on existing and overhauled engine of XPlane will be similarly limited visual quality wise. Some won’t look bad, like ambient occlusion, as the final result will highly be blurred. Any variant of Screen Space shader highly depends on screen resolution and depth map bit depth. Instead of these teasers, I'd rather watch a 2 hours video of Austin, explaining the changes in front of the white board in great detail. What I need is a solid reassurance that X-plane engine is having a major overhaul, not just a superficial make up. Quite worried that Laminar Research is having a lot of trouble closing the gap, bringing X-Plane engine to a modern level. I am quite worried after seeing these two teasers to be honest. If not practically, for sure theoretically. Any X-Plane user who went on a mission to make his sim as good looking and as realistic as possible, is already quite informed and know every cranny and nook of the xplane engine. Laminar Research should know better than that. IMO these trailers are quite superficial, weak attempts to build hype. While any advancement is appreciated, I can't see anything truly 'next generation' visually. But, what I see in the trailer is barely on par with a quality addon of 'this' generation. I am assuming both visually and systems wise. Next generation Fleet, seem like default aircraft overhaul. Still don't have global illumination, still don't have multi source shadows, still don't have atmospheric diffusion and dispersion.

Next generation lighting, is a shader overhaul using 5 year old technology. Wake me up when Laminar Research releases next generation weather or scenery trailers.
